CELEBRAte life with limn house
I’m Katie Schiff, owner and the creative force behind Limn House. I’ve been drawing my whole life. In Kindergarten, I learned how to draw a bunny from a reference picture, and even finished it off with a fuzzy cotton ball tail. It was the highlight of my classroom’s picture wall and I realized I had a talent. I created storybooks through elementary school, drawing characters and illustrations and stapling pages together to bind my final books. My 5th grade classmates “hired” me to illustrate their stories, too. I didn't learn to paint until high school, but immediately fell in love and went on to art school to continue to paint and paint and paint.
It was in art school that I really began to discover myself. My work often focused on personal psychology. I painted large realistic interiors and made mixed-media photographic collages of my family and friends as we spent time together on holidays and birthdays. I was interested in who I was and how I felt when we were together in these interior rooms and spaces -- experiencing those moments, crowded together; in my mom’s kitchen where we would laugh like crazy, my grandmother’s living room, my best friend’s bedroom. These were places we bonded together and created memories.
Limn House first began as a way to start making art again after working for years in the design industry. It became my purpose for letting go, allowing myself room to experiment and get messy with different media. I began painting everything that was cute and happy and inspirational because that’s what I was craving, and wrote a lot about my own emotional transitions and encouragement.
But I was missing a really key and important message: who was I creating for? As I began to think about my audience, the marketplace, and my ideal clients, my friends Jeff and Andrew came along and asked me to paint something special for their new place together. You can read about it here.
I delivered a custom painting of the Columbus skyline, fit for their living room. We hung it up together, stood back, and marveled at how alive it made their space. The colors were selected specifically to match their decor, but the result was more than I could have hoped for. I knew this was going to be a place where they would begin to build their lives together as a couple and create special memories. And I loved being a part of that.
